Egypt File Official FIFA Complaint Against Referee After Argentina World Cup Defeat

Egypt’s dramatic World Cup exit has sparked a major refereeing controversy after the Pharaohs were beaten 3-2 by Argentina in a tense knockout match.

The Egyptian camp has refused to accept the result quietly, lodging a formal complaint with football’s governing body in the days following the defeat.

Egypt had led 2-0 before Argentina produced a stunning late comeback, making the eventual outcome all the more painful for the African side.

According to journalist Ismael Mahmoud, Egyptian Football Association president Hany Abo Rida filed an official complaint against French referee François Letexier and his assistants following the match.

The complaint reportedly requests a full investigation into the controversial decisions made during the game by the French officiating team.

Egypt have also asked that François Letexier and his assistants be removed from the remainder of the tournament, a significant and bold demand.

AS reported that the Egyptian FA formally requested a FIFA investigation into the refereeing decisions, with Egypt feeling several major incidents were not handled correctly.

The main complaints appear to centre around decisions late in the match, including penalty appeals and incidents surrounding Argentina’s decisive goal.

Argentina’s comeback was still a remarkable feat, with Cristian Romero, Lionel Messi, and Enzo Fernández all scoring to overturn the two-goal deficit in extraordinary fashion.

However, the manner of the defeat has left Egypt feeling that their historic World Cup run may have been ended unfairly, fuelling the decision to pursue formal action.

Knockout football is often decided by fine margins, and when a team believes major officiating calls have influenced the result, strong reactions are inevitable.

Egypt’s anger has completely dominated the post-match narrative, overshadowing what was otherwise a stunning Argentine comeback performance.

FIFA will now face pressure to respond to the complaint in a transparent way, even if changing the result itself is not within the scope of any review.

Calling for an officiating team’s removal mid-tournament is an extreme measure, and FIFA would likely require clear evidence of serious errors before considering such action.

The situation has grown beyond a single defeat and has opened a broader debate about officiating standards at the tournament as a whole.
