Where is YNW Melly in February 2026: Florida Court Dismisses Several Charges

A Florida court has dismissed several charges against rapper YNW Melly ahead of his upcoming retrial, narrowing the scope of one of the state’s most closely watched criminal cases involving a high-profile music artist.

Jamell Maurice Demons, 26, still faces first-degree murder accusations connected to a 2018 double shooting involving two members of his YNW music collective.

The dropped counts included witness tampering and other related allegations that prosecutors had previously tied to events surrounding his 2023 trial.

Authorities confirmed the dismissal occurred on January 20, one day before jury selection had been scheduled to begin in that separate case.

Assistant State Attorney Alixandra Buckelew announced the decision during a status conference in Broward County court.

Despite the change, the core charges remain unchanged and the rapper continues to await a new trial date set for January 2027.

Charges Narrowed Ahead Of Retrial

Prosecutors removed four counts against Demons, including witness tampering, conspiracy to tamper with a witness in a capital case, criminal solicitation to commit murder, and directing the activities of a criminal gang.

The allegations had accused the artist of attempting to influence testimony connected to his earlier double-murder proceedings.

His 2023 trial ended in a mistrial after jurors deliberated for three days but could not reach a unanimous verdict.

Legal analysts say the dismissal does not weaken the state’s homicide case but may streamline proceedings for the retrial.

Demons has remained in custody since his arrest in February 2019 and a judge denied his pre-trial release request in May 2025.

Where is YNW Melly Now?

The rapper is accused in the October 26, 2018 shooting deaths of childhood friends Anthony “YNW Sakchaser” Williams and Christopher “YNW Juvy” Thomas Jr.

Investigators alleged the killings were staged to resemble a drive-by shooting.

Another defendant, Cortlen “YNW Bortlen” Henry, accepted a plea deal in September 2025 and received a 10-year prison sentence on accessory charges.

Demons, however, continues to deny wrongdoing and previously entered not-guilty pleas.

The artist, born in Gifford, Florida, rose to prominence through collaborations with major hip-hop performers and built a large national following before his arrest.

Possible Penalties

Florida prosecutors have formally stated their intent to seek the death penalty if Demons is convicted.

Under state law, first-degree murder carries either life imprisonment without parole or capital punishment.

The retrial is scheduled to begin January 6, 2027.

Until then, Demons will remain at the Broward County Jail awaiting proceedings.

What Happens Next

The dismissal of secondary charges means the 2027 proceedings will focus almost entirely on homicide allegations and forensic evidence.

Legal observers expect renewed debate over ballistic evidence, witness testimony, and the prosecution’s theory of a staged shooting.

With capital punishment still on the table, the retrial could become one of the most consequential celebrity criminal cases in Florida in recent years.
