Manchester United Soften Rashford Stance As Barcelona Transfer Talks Edge Closer

Manchester United appear ready to open negotiations with Barcelona over a permanent Marcus Rashford deal, signalling a significant shift in the club’s position.

United had previously insisted that Barcelona activate the full €30m permanent option written into Rashford’s loan agreement, but that stance has now become more flexible.

According to reports, the Old Trafford club are now willing to discuss an alternative fee rather than demanding the clause be triggered in full.

Rashford joined Barcelona on loan from United for the 2025/26 season, with the €30m purchase option agreed as part of that arrangement.

His loan spell runs until mid-June, leaving both clubs with a narrow window to reach an agreement before the situation becomes more complicated.

Barcelona’s financial position makes the full €30m a difficult ask, particularly after a busy summer window that has already stretched their resources.

The Catalan club signed Anthony Gordon from Newcastle in a deal reported by Reuters to be worth an initial €80m plus add-ons, placing further strain on their spending capacity.

That significant outlay has raised genuine questions over whether Barcelona can justify paying the full clause to retain Rashford as well.

Despite the financial complications, Rashford is understood to want to stay in Spain, with The Guardian reporting he is keen to remain in Catalonia following a productive loan spell.

He contributed meaningfully to Barcelona’s La Liga title-winning campaign, scoring an important goal in the clinching victory over Real Madrid.

Rashford ended the league season with eight goals and nine assists, figures that suggest he has settled well into life under his new club.

His wages, reported at around £325,000 per week, make a return to Old Trafford an unappealing option for a United side looking to move on.

Barcelona are reportedly exploring an offer at roughly half the agreed option figure, which would fall well short of what United originally demanded.

United’s willingness to negotiate reflects a practical understanding that holding firm on €30m could leave them with a player they no longer want in their plans.

A compromise fee may not represent the ideal outcome for United, but it could prove the most sensible resolution for all parties involved this summer.
