Tottenham Hotspur have thrown themselves into the race to sign Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali this summer transfer window.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed the news in an exclusive update posted to X, sending shockwaves through the Premier League transfer landscape.
Spurs head coach Roberto De Zerbi is said to view the Italian international as the “star” signing needed to transform his midfield and raise the club’s technical standards.
Tottenham’s pursuit of Tonali comes after a turbulent season that saw the club narrowly secure Premier League survival on the final day of the campaign.
The club’s hierarchy is clearly determined to back De Zerbi with a serious squad overhaul, having already brought in Andy Robertson from Liverpool and Marcos Senesi from Bournemouth.
Romano posted the following on X: “EXCLUSIVE: Tottenham have entered the race to sign Sandro Tonali! De Zerbi wants Tonali as new star for the midfield, ideal to step up #THFC level. Spurs ready to face Man City and Arsenal in the race for Tonali for new ambitious project to prove their intentions.”
Tottenham’s entry into the race means De Zerbi’s side must now compete directly with both Arsenal and Manchester City, who had already established firm interest in the Newcastle midfielder.
Arsenal had reportedly initiated contact with people close to Tonali, with Mikel Arteta identifying him as the ideal box-to-box midfielder to complement Declan Rice in the Gunners’ engine room.
Newcastle’s £100 million valuation has reportedly cooled Manchester United’s interest, though Tottenham appear undeterred by the significant financial demands involved in any potential deal.
Newcastle’s failure to qualify for European football has left them in a vulnerable negotiating position, making it difficult for the club to resist substantial offers for their prized asset.
One key advantage Spurs may hold over Arsenal is the promise of a guaranteed central role, whereas Tonali would face considerable rotational competition at the Emirates Stadium.
De Zerbi’s tactical system places enormous emphasis on dynamic, technically gifted midfielders, making Tonali an almost perfect fit for the style the Italian coach is trying to implement at Spurs.
If Tottenham can match Newcastle’s valuation and present a compelling sporting project, this could shape up to be one of the most dramatic transfer hijacks of the summer window.
