Joao Palhinha spent last season on loan at Tottenham Hotspur, and the club now appear increasingly likely to secure his signature on a permanent basis.
The 30-year-old Portuguese midfielder was a notable addition during his loan spell, and his performances in north London have clearly left an impression on the club’s decision-makers.
Tottenham hold an option to sign Palhinha permanently following the expiry of his loan deal, though they are yet to formally trigger that clause as negotiations continue.
His future at Bayern Munich is considered finished, with the German champions expected to sell the midfielder outright this summer rather than allow another temporary arrangement.
Sporting CP had been linked with a return move for their former player in recent weeks, raising questions about where Palhinha would ultimately end up next season.
However, according to Portuguese publication O Jogo, it now appears that Palhinha will “slip through Sporting CP’s fingers,” with a permanent move to Tottenham looking far more likely.
Tottenham’s need for defensive solidity and physicality in central midfield makes Palhinha an appealing long-term addition to Roberto De Zerbi’s squad.
The midfielder settled well into life at the club during his loan spell, and retaining him would mean continuity rather than the disruption of integrating an entirely new player into the system.
From Palhinha’s perspective, a permanent move to Tottenham also carries genuine appeal, given that he has already established himself within the squad and the city.
Tottenham have been working to strengthen their defensive unit this summer, and adding Palhinha to the midfield on a lasting deal would represent a smart piece of business for the club.
