Lionel Messi is entering the final stretch of the 2025 Major League Soccer season with Inter Miami, as the team prepares for the Eastern Conference Final against New York City FC.
Despite reaching the conference final for the first time in franchise history and sitting just one win away from their first MLS Cup appearance, Inter Miami are already planning for the 2026 campaign.
The Herons are reportedly set to add another Argentina international to their roster, offering Messi further support on the pitch.
Facundo Mura: The Next Addition
Argentine transfer expert Germán García Grova has reported that Inter Miami are close to signing right back Facundo Mura from Racing Club.
Mura’s contract with Racing Club expires at the end of December 2025, and Inter Miami have emerged as the frontrunners to secure his services ahead of next season.
During the 2025 campaign, Mura has played 1,811 minutes across 31 matches, averaging 58 minutes per game.
He has scored four goals and contributed one assist, showcasing a strong two-way profile that fits well with Javier Mascherano’s tactical system.
The 26-year-old’s consistency is notable, having missed just nine matches throughout his professional career.
With Sergio Reguilón expected to replace Jordi Alba at left back, Lionel Messi could see both defensive flanks strengthened for the 2026 season.
Potential Departures Following Mura’s Arrival
The signing of Mura could trigger changes within the current squad.
Inter Miami have 12 players with contracts expiring at the end of the season, including star striker Luis Suárez.
At right back, Marcelo Weigandt is the most likely to depart. The 25-year-old’s loan deal ends in December 2025, and with no purchase option included, he is expected to return to Boca Juniors.
Ian Fray, a versatile 23-year-old center back who has occasionally played at right back, also has a contract expiring this December.
Unlike Weigandt, Fray is expected to be retained, with Mura projected as the first-choice right back for the 2026 season.
Inter Miami’s front office continues to focus on building a squad capable of sustaining their recent success while keeping Messi supported on both ends of the field.
