Jason Wilcox Confirms Delight As Tom Heaton Signs New One-Year Deal At Manchester United

Manchester United have confirmed their first summer signing, with veteran goalkeeper Tom Heaton agreeing a new one-year contract extension at Old Trafford.

The 40-year-old’s previous deal was set to expire at the end of June, making the renewal a timely piece of business for the club.

Director of Football Jason Wilcox issued a statement to fans confirming the news, expressing his satisfaction at retaining the experienced shot-stopper.

“We are delighted that Tom is continuing for another year,” Wilcox told club media, highlighting the value Heaton brings beyond matchday performances.

“Everyone is well aware of the importance of his leadership and professionalism within the group,” the Director of Football added, underlining Heaton’s standing in the dressing room.

Wilcox also pointed to Heaton’s mentoring role, stating that “Tom has played a key role in helping to support Senne [Lammens] throughout his first season in the Premier League.”

He continued: “His constant dedication and mentality set a fantastic standard for our goalkeeping group,” cementing Heaton’s value as a dressing room presence rather than a playing one.

Heaton has not featured for the first team since 2021, yet his influence on United’s goalkeepers has kept him firmly in the club’s plans season after season.

The three-capped England international made the bench five times last season, appearing on the substitutes’ list four times in the Premier League and once in the League Cup.

His primary role this past campaign was supporting Senne Lammens, the 23-year-old Belgian who arrived from Royal Antwerp after United pivoted away from a deal for Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martinez.

Lammens went on to enjoy a remarkable debut campaign in Manchester, earning widespread praise despite the turbulence surrounding Ruben Amorim’s departure from the club.

The Club Brugge graduate was named the Premier League’s Transfer of the Season on June 1, a remarkable accolade for a goalkeeper in only his maiden top-flight English season.

Heaton’s continuation ensures Lammens retains a trusted and experienced mentor as he enters his second season in the Premier League spotlight.

Meanwhile, Altay Bayindir and Andre Onana are both expected to leave the club in the coming months as United reshape their goalkeeping department around Lammens.

A new second-choice goalkeeper is anticipated to be brought in to complete the group, with the two outgoing stoppers set to be offloaded to free up space and wages.
