The Portland Timbers have agreed to trade midfielder David Ayala to Inter Miami CF in exchange for $2 million, the club announced.
The deal also includes potential performance-based add-ons worth up to $150,000.
Portland may additionally retain a sell-on percentage if Ayala is transferred again above a specified fee.
Club Explains Strategic Decision
Timbers General Manager Ned Grabavoy said the move benefits both the player and the club’s long-term planning.
“We would like to thank David for his contributions and commitment to the club since arriving as a young player four years ago,” Grabavoy said.
“This move allows David the opportunity to be situated closer to family as he assesses the next phase of his career,”
“The return will allow us the ability to strengthen and reinforce our roster over the long term.”
Ayala’s Contribution In Portland
Ayala spent four seasons with the Timbers after joining ahead of the 2022 MLS campaign.
During that period, he made 88 appearances across all competitions, including 62 starts.
The Argentine midfielder recorded three goals and two assists while operating primarily in a central midfield role.
He occupied a U22 Initiative Slot during his time with the club.
Career Path And Future Outlook
Portland originally signed Ayala from Club Estudiantes de la Plata in Argentina’s Primera División.
His development coincided with a period of transition for the Timbers’ midfield structure.
The trade provides Portland with additional financial flexibility ahead of future roster decisions.
For Ayala, the move offers a fresh opportunity in a different environment as he enters the next stage of his professional career.
