Barcelona have allowed their €30 million buy option on Marcus Rashford to expire, leaving the England forward’s future in a state of significant uncertainty heading into the summer.
The 28-year-old is currently with England as they prepare to face Croatia in their World Cup opening game in the United States.
Upon returning from the Americas, Rashford will be forced to confront a club situation that has become increasingly complicated in recent weeks.
Barcelona had held the option to sign Rashford permanently, but the Blaugrana allowed that clause to expire, with the signing of Anthony Gordon appearing to shift their priorities.
Hansi Flick had reportedly been keen on keeping Rashford at the club, yet Barcelona have not ruled out a move entirely, though he is not considered a priority target.
As reported by The Athletic, Rashford would prefer to remain at Manchester United this summer rather than join any other Premier League side.
A £40 million release clause is currently active, which any club can trigger barring Liverpool and Manchester City, and several Premier League sides have expressed interest in the forward.
Aston Villa, who had Rashford on loan previously, have been linked with him on a number of occasions as speculation continues to mount around his future.
Rashford still has two years remaining on his United contract, and while a second successive summer departure had appeared likely, suggestions of a possible return to Old Trafford have emerged for the first time.
However, those suggestions appear to have little traction within United’s own walls, with manager Michael Carrick reportedly keen on reintegrating Rashford before holding talks with the leadership group that ruled out any plans to bring him back.
Manchester United are understood to be pursuing a permanent sale for Rashford regardless, whether that destination turns out to be Barcelona or elsewhere.
The situation leaves Rashford in an awkward position, with his preferred outcome seemingly at odds with his club’s intentions as the summer transfer window approaches.
