Inter Miami began a new era with Lionel Messi’s arrival in 2023. However, the Argentine player wasn’t coming alone, and that summer, one of the players to arrive was Sergio Busquets.
Moreover, during his stint, the former Barcelona standout was part of the group that won the Supporters’ Shield and the Leagues Cup. Busquets likely didn’t want to just be a sidekick for Messi, the veteran midfielder wanted to show that he still had football left in his tank.
Still, with the arrival of Rodrigo De Paul, the writing was on the wall that Busquets’ football career was coming to an end and on Thursday night, Inter Miami made the official announcement.

Once the 2025 MLS season ends for Inter Miami, Busquets will be hanging up his boots as the team announced the player’s retirement plans.
“Inter Miami CF announces that Sergio Busquets will retire at the end of the current season, with the MLS playoffs marking the final matches of his professional career,” the press release said.
“Since joining Inter Miami CF in 2023, Busquets has been instrumental in the club’s continued growth, contributing his vision and quality in midfield, as well as his experience and leadership, and playing a role in winning both the Supporters’ Shield and the Leagues Cup.”
Nonetheless, the team likely wants to send Busquets off a champion as they will look to win the league title. Moreover, it’s something that the Spanish standout has yet to do since arriving in South Florida.
“The team now looks forward to his contribution in the push for its objectives during the final stretch of the campaign, which will bring to a close an extraordinary career that saw him claim numerous titles and accolades with FC Barcelona and the Spanish National Team, earning recognition as one of the greatest midfielders in football history,” the press release added.
