Inter Miami entered a new chapter in 2023 with Lionel Messi joining the squad. The Argentine superstar wasn’t the only notable addition that summer, as Sergio Busquets also made the move to the team.
Nonetheless, that Inter Miami era is slowly ending with the latest news regarding Busquets. Following the conclusion of the 2025 MLS season, Inter Miami confirmed that Busquets will retire, bringing his illustrious playing career to a close.
“Inter Miami CF announces that Sergio Busquets will retire at the end of the current season, with the MLS playoffs marking the final matches of his professional career,” the press release said.
“Since joining Inter Miami CF in 2023, Busquets has been instrumental in the club’s continued growth, contributing his vision and quality in midfield, as well as his experience and leadership, and playing a role in winning both the Supporters’ Shield and the Leagues Cup.”

On Friday, Inter Miami manager Javier Mascherano spoke about the choice made by his player and former teammate.
“He gathered all of us and told us — we were surprised,” Mascherano said (h/t World Soccer Talk). “Busi is totally convinced… It’s a shame because he’s still performing at a high level, and we could keep enjoying the quality he brings.”
“When a former teammate announces his retirement, it stirs up everything we’ve lived through. What I try to talk to them about is what they’ll face the day after. It’s not easy, and you have to be ready.”
Inter Miami likely hopes to see Busquets leave as a champion while they aim for the MLS title. On top of that, the Spanish star has yet to claim that honor since joining the South Florida club.
“The team now looks forward to his contribution in the push for its objectives during the final stretch of the campaign, which will bring to a close an extraordinary career that saw him claim numerous titles and accolades with FC Barcelona and the Spanish National Team, earning recognition as one of the greatest midfielders in football history,” the Inter Miami press release od Busquets’ retirement added.
