Sergio Busquets, Inter Miami

This week, Sergio Busquets announced that he would retire from professional football. Busquets arrived in South Florida to reunite with his former FC Barcelona teammate Lionel Messi to begin a new era at Inter Miami.

“Inter Miami CF announces that Sergio Busquets will retire at the end of the current season, with the MLS playoffs marking the final matches of his professional career,” the press release said.

“Since joining Inter Miami CF in 2023, Busquets has been instrumental in the club’s continued growth, contributing his vision and quality in midfield, as well as his experience and leadership, and playing a role in winning both the Supporters’ Shield and the Leagues Cup.”

Inter Miami will be eager to send Busquets off as a champion, with the club still chasing an MLS title. For the Spanish midfielder, it’s the one trophy that has eluded him since making the move to Miami.

Every Inter Miami player will cherish the minutes they spend on the pitch with Busquets. One player who intends to savor the moment will be Maximiliano Falcón. After the 1-1 draw on Saturday afternoon, Falcón was asked about Busquets’ decision to retire, and he had a heartfelt message to his teammate.

“I’ve always been a Barcelona fan for as long as I can remember,” Falcón said postgame (h/t En Juego Sports). “Playing with them today is very special for me—it’s a dream come true. He’s a silent leader, with a style of play that may never be seen again on the field. For me, he’s the best No. 5 in history, as I’ve always said.

“I admire his style of play, and while I may not have learned much in terms of technique. He’s also a great person, which carries over into the locker room. He’s a quiet leader, and there are lessons you take from him for the future.”
