Sergio Busquets revealed this week that he will retire from professional football. In 2023, the midfielder moved to South Florida to reunite with former FC Barcelona teammate Lionel Messi, helping launch a new chapter with Inter Miami.
“Inter Miami CF announces that Sergio Busquets will retire at the end of the current season, with the MLS playoffs marking the final matches of his professional career,” the press release said.
“Since joining Inter Miami CF in 2023, Busquets has been instrumental in the club’s continued growth, contributing his vision and quality in midfield, as well as his experience and leadership, and playing a role in winning both the Supporters’ Shield and the Leagues Cup.”

Before Inter Miami faced Toronto FC in their 1-1 draw on Saturday, Busquets spoke with Apple TV and broke his silence over the decision to retire after the 2025 MLS season.
“I had thought it through, even though I announced it the other day,” Busquets said (h/t Miami Total Futbol). “In the end, it’s just part of life, football, and sports in general, and I’m very happy with everything. Now, though, I’m focused on the rest of the MLS season, the league matches, and trying to finish as high in the standings as possible to approach the playoffs in the best way.”

Moreover, the former Barcelona star noted that it wasn’t a difficult decision to make, considering everything lined up for him to begin his life after football.
“Well, it’s clear that I knew this was my last year under contract,” Busquets added. “After so many years, so many games, so many trips, it takes a toll not just physically, but mentally as well. Both my family and I felt this was the right decision, and that my story in football would end here. As I’ve said before, I’ve given my all to the sport, learned from it, and from life, and that’s about it.”
Inter Miami are determined to give Busquets a proper send-off, with the club still in pursuit of an MLS title. For the Spanish midfielder, it remains the lone trophy missing since his arrival in Miami.
