Newcastle Lose Second Tyne-Wear Derby as Brobbey Strikes Deep Into Added Time

Sunday’s second Tyne-Wear derby of the season followed a familiar pattern from the first: Sunderland winning, Newcastle suffering, and a city left divided by the result.

Brian Brobbey scored the only goal of his side in the 90th minute, turning home after Enzo Le Fée had picked him out in space at the far post.

It ended 2-1, with Newcastle having led through an early Anthony Gordon goal before Chemsdine Talbi levelled from close range after the interval.

The opening goal came from a moment of terrible judgement. Luke O’Nien’s back-pass went straight to Brobbey, who laid the ball off for Gordon to finish low inside the post after just 10 minutes.

Sunderland responded with character. Granit Xhaka’s corner delivery caused confusion and Talbi pounced when the initial clearance fell loose, prodding home from close range shortly after half-time.

Newcastle pressed for a winner and had a headed goal from Malick Thiaw ruled out by VAR — Murphy deemed to have been both offside and impeding the goalkeeper.

With the game still level, Sunderland kept probing. Le Fée built the move on the right and found Brobbey, who took a touch before finishing emphatically to send the away end wild.

The result means Sunderland move above Newcastle into 11th place in the table, a symbolic as much as numerical marker of the gap between the clubs’ form this season.

More strikingly, Newcastle have now not beaten Sunderland on home turf since October 2010 — a run spanning over a decade and multiple league divisions.

The home crowd made their frustration clear. Eddie Howe heard them, acknowledged it publicly, and said he understood the response.

Newcastle have lost eight of their last 11 league games. A top-six finish, which looked possible in the autumn, now looks extremely remote.
