Gakpo Exit Talk Dismissed As Liverpool Plan For New Era Under Iraola

Cody Gakpo has not asked to leave Liverpool despite widespread reports suggesting the Dutch international is pushing for a move away from Anfield.

The 27-year-old forward’s future has been the subject of intense speculation following Liverpool’s decision to sack manager Arne Slot.

Gakpo was reportedly shocked by Slot’s dismissal and a number of reports claimed the forward was seeking an exit as a result of his unhappiness.

However, journalist Alex Crook has moved to clarify the situation, offering a firm rebuttal to those suggestions circulating in the media.

Crook wrote: “Told suggestions Cody Gakpo has asked to leave #LFC are wide of the mark. Also nothing in his Egypt teammate Ahmed El-Shenawy’s claim Mo Salah could return to Anfield.”

Gakpo joined Liverpool in January 2023 from PSV Eindhoven and quickly established himself as an important member of the first-team squad at Anfield.

During the 2024/25 season, the versatile forward operated predominantly on the left flank and played a significant role in Liverpool’s Premier League title triumph, contributing 25 goal contributions.

His numbers dipped to 15 goal contributions in the most recently concluded campaign, though Liverpool’s overall performances as a collective also fell below the high standards set in previous years.

With four years still remaining on his current contract, Gakpo remains a firmly committed Liverpool player with no indication of any desire to move on.

New Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola is reportedly keen to add depth and quality to the wide areas of his squad, though those plans are understood to be completely separate from any scenario involving Gakpo’s departure.

The question of Mohamed Salah’s potential return to Anfield had also gathered momentum after his Egypt teammate Ahmed El-Shenawy appeared to suggest it was a possibility, though Crook has dismissed those claims as lacking any substance.

Liverpool head into the summer transfer window under fresh leadership, with Iraola tasked with rebuilding the squad and restoring the club to the levels that delivered Premier League success under Slot.
