Inter Miami entered a new era in 2023 with Lionel Messi joining the squad, instantly raising expectations for the team. That summer, they strengthened their lineup further by bringing in another superstar, Sergio Busquets.
Following the conclusion of the 2025 MLS season, Inter Miami announced that Busquets will retire, closing the chapter on a remarkable career and leaving behind a legacy that helped shape the MLS club alongside Messi.
“Inter Miami CF announces that Sergio Busquets will retire at the end of the current season, with the MLS playoffs marking the final matches of his professional career,” the press release said.
“Since joining Inter Miami CF in 2023, Busquets has been instrumental in the club’s continued growth, contributing his vision and quality in midfield, as well as his experience and leadership, and playing a role in winning both the Supporters’ Shield and the Leagues Cup.”

Inter Miami coach Javier Mascherano addressed the decision and also revealed what Busquets intends to do once he hangs up his boots at the end of the season.
“We’ve talked in the past, and Busquets told me he’ll try to become a coach,” Mascherano said (h/t World Soccer Talk). “Busi is going to be a coach — when, how, and where will be up to him. I don’t know when it will happen, but he has all the necessary qualities.”
Before considering a move into coaching, Inter Miami will likely aim to see Busquets leave as a champion, with the club targeting a MLS title. For the Spanish star, it would also mark his league championship since joining the South Florida side.
Inter Miami are one of the favorites to win the league title once the playoffs come around. Nonetheless, Mascherano’s squad are currently third in the Eastern Conference behind the Philadelphia Union and FC Cincinnati.
