Inter Miami are entering the final stretch of the 2025 MLS season, and Lionel Messi is stepping up his game. This week, the South Florida club had two games in four days, but they are off to a good start after defeating New York City FC 4-0 on Wednesday night at Citi Field.
Messi spearheaded Inter Miami CF’s attack, netting two second-half goals to bring his total to five in nine days. When Inter Miami earned a penalty in the 83rd minute, Messi had a chance to complete a hat trick but let longtime teammate Luis Suárez take the kick instead.
Furthermore, the Argentine scored two or more goals in eight of Inter Miami’s last 12 matches, making him the fourth player in MLS history to tally multiple goals in just eight games during a single season.

ESPN’s Shaka Hislop broke down Messi’s recent performances for Inter Miami in MLS on the newest episode of Futbol Americas.
“He’s good,” Hislop said. “Listen, it really is scary to see Lionel Messi doing things at the continuously because the father time catches up with us all. And the question just becomes, at what point does he catch up?
“And right now, he is showing no signs of slowing down. He continues to be not just a big joy for Major League Soccer, but the way he plays the game continues to remind us as to why he’s regarded as the best that ever played.
“Because he makes his game look so simple, and the things that he does are anything. Look at the two holes that he took. There was nothing simple about gaming. You watch him execute, and you think anybody can pull that off.”
Miami is currently third in the Eastern Conference with 55 points from 29 games, just two matches behind leaders Philadelphia Union.
