Tottenham have officially confirmed the signing of Mateus Fernandes from West Ham, bringing an end to a transfer saga that attracted interest from several top clubs.
The 21-year-old Portugal international has been one of the most sought-after young midfielders in English football, with Manchester United among the clubs pushing hardest to secure his services.
Despite the Red Devils’ efforts, Fernandes has opted to move across London to Spurs, and his reasoning is now clear after speaking to the club’s official website.
ESPN’s Rob Dawson reported that Manchester United pushed hard to sign Fernandes but were ultimately not prepared to match Tottenham’s bid for the talented youngster.
Dawson also noted that United never felt clear on Fernandes’ preference of club during negotiations, which stood in contrast to their experiences with other recent signings.
“Mbeumo and Cunha were desperate to join last summer and United didn’t have the same feeling with Fernandes,” Dawson wrote, suggesting the player’s heart was always elsewhere.
That assessment appears to have been well-founded, with Fernandes making no secret of the fact that Tottenham head coach Roberto De Zerbi was the decisive factor in his decision.
Speaking on the club’s official website, Fernandes said: “I’m very excited for this next step. Spurs is a massive club and the Head Coach was a key part of why I have decided to join.”
The young midfielder elaborated further on what drew him to De Zerbi’s project, highlighting a shared footballing philosophy as a central reason for his excitement about the move.
“When we spoke, it was very special. We look at football in the same way – going onto the pitch as a strong team, with fight and energy, to try and win every game,” Fernandes added.
He concluded his comments with a clear message of intent, saying he could not wait “to get started, to meet the fans, to meet everyone, and give everything for the Club.”
De Zerbi arrives at Tottenham with a strong reputation built largely on his impressive work in the Premier League with Brighton, where he established himself as one of the game’s most innovative tacticians.
A quality young midfielder in the mould of Fernandes should give the Italian coach a strong foundation from which to implement his high-energy, possession-based style at Spurs.
According to the Independent, Tottenham’s summer activity may not stop there, with Rafael Leao, Savinho, Eli Junior Kroupi, and James Trafford all reportedly on the club’s list of targets.
